Good rain only expected next year

WHILE rainfall in the past few days has done little to boost KwaZulu-Natal dam levels, climate experts are warning that good rainfall could only come after January next year.

Far more rain is required to get some of the dams into a healthy condition, according to Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder.

“The situation in the South Coast in EJ Smith, Nungwane and Umzinto dams has worsened,” he said.

He said the need to conserve water in those areas has become desperate.

Harichunder said the situation in the Ixopo system had slightly improved, with the dam level having risen from 40 to 41%.

He said the uMngeni system, which supplies water to uMgungundlovu, eThekwini, Pietermaritzburg and parts of Ugu, was looking healthy.

Mearns Dam, Spring Grove Dam, Midmar Dam, Inanda Dam, Albert Falls Dam and Nagle Dam levels range between 82 and 80%.

“It means that there is sufficient water to treat and supply the above mentioned area. However people should continue to use water sparingly,” said Harichunder.

He said there has been no good rain in the spring months and parts of KZN are already in a drought situation.

KZN Agricultural Union president Mike Black said there may have been some rain in parts of the province, but much more was needed for the farming community.
