Good start a must for Blitsbokke

CAPE TOWN — The South African sevens team will want to improve on the fourth place they reached in Australia when they start the Dubai Sevens Rugby Tournament today.

To achieve this goal, the Blitsbokke will have to play each game in the group phase like it’s a final. Last year the South Africans did not reach the quarter-finals after being knocked out early.

On paper, the Blitsbokke seem to have two easy draws against Argentina and Russia, but they also have Samoa — the current Dubai champs.

The South Americans earlier this year beat the Blitsbokke 21-0 in Hong Kong.

SA captain Kyle Brown said they were keen to start today with a win against the Argentinians.

“Before the Gold Coast tournament we knew these two tournaments would show how good we can expect to be in the World Series. It is imperative to do well in Dubai and Port Elizabeth to get a good start in the series.”

The Russians play the second match against the Blitsbokke.
