2011-12-24 00:00

FACEBOOK in all its forms dominated the top 10 most-searched term of 2011, according web research company Experian Hitwise. This marks three years in a row that Facebook has topped the rankings, be it as Facebook, Facebook.com, Facebook Login and www.facebook.com.

Facebook also tops South Africa’s Zeitgeist, the Google listings of topics that countries google the most, but Google then reveals South Africans to be a romantic lot, with the search term “What Is Love” their second most typed-in search query in South Africa, with “What Is Life?” in third place.

On the google’s fastest rising searches across the globe, the very bad but attractive singer, Rebecca Black looks set to top the chart for 2011 as the fastest rising searched-for item on the Internet this year. The teen pop star made a big splash on the Internet with the release of her 2011 pop single Friday. The music video catapulted the then 13-year-old to celebrity status after the video went viral, receiving over 167 million views on YouTube.

In second place is Google+ — the search engine giant’s new social media platform which was launched this year — followed by Ryan Dunn (34), the Jackass actor who died in a car accident on June.
