Grab your hat and head for the gardens

2011-06-10 00:00

THE stage is set for Sunday’s annual Concert in the Park, to be held in the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens.

The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra will perform under the baton of the celebrated Richard Cock, who is best known for his Last Night of the Proms, Songs of Praise and RMB Starlight Classics.

The concert is staged annually by Parklane SuperSpar and is organised this year by Brad Glasspoole and Christopher Duigan. The programme promises to appeal to all musical tastes. The first performance, by The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC) Wind Band, will start at 11 am.

Maritzburg College and TWC team up at noon to present a foot-stomping revue of 50 years of South African pop music. For the remainder of the afternoon Spanish guitar soloist James Grace, the KZNPO and an obligatory appearance by the Caledonian pipeband will be the order of the day.

It’s going to be a day of not-to-be-missed entertainment.

Tickets are on sale at Parklane Spar and at the gate on Sunday. They cost R100 for adults and R50 for children, with a free ticket with every five purchased and an extra child’s ticket free with two adults’ and one child’s tickets.

Don’t forget your garden chairs, blankets, that all-important hat and, of course, the picnic hamper.
