Graduate shoots for the top

2011-04-21 00:00

LAZOLA Dabula always aims high. She is the first black woman to graduate with a B Tech in video technology from Durban University of Technology (DUT)f.

Last year she passed her national diploma cum laude.

She is working as a project administrator for the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts and at just 22 she is also running her own production company.

Dabula is one of over 4 500 students who graduated from DUT this week.

Originally from Mthatha, Dabula is the youngest of four girls raised by a single parent.

She moved to Durban to join her sisters at the age of 15 , in pursuit of better educational opportunities.

To pay for her costly course she waited on tables and did retail promotions before she started freelancing as a camera operator, editor and production assistant.
