Grandson of Comrades founder enters marathon, despite injury

GREAT grandson of Comrades’ founder, Vic Clapham, will be taking on this year’s uphill run, despite a recent injury. Antony Clapham, the first descendant of his family to run the Comrades Marathon, recently injured the muscles along his left shin. “I still have a slight injury … I was going to throw in the towel, but I couldn’t after all the commitment and training I’ve put in.”

After receiving physiotherapy, 34-year-old Clapham feels he is ready for his first Comrades. However, he is realistic with his goals. “I’ll probably just take the day as it comes. I haven’t set a goal or time, I just want to finish.”

He is not simply running for himself, says Clapham, who has been raising funds for the wildlife organisation Wildlands Conservation Trust. “They do a lot for the environment and humanity,” said Clapham of the non-profit organisation. “It’s a cause that’s very close to my heart.”

Unfortunately, Clapham has not been able to raise the funds he had hoped for. He has been putting in training sessions four times a week, training with the Natal Carbineers Athletic Club.“I’m running with a great bunch of people.”

He says the club has been very supportive in teaching about what to do, down to how to breathe while running. “There has been so much you have to learn,” said Clapham, who has participated in the Argus Cycle Tour, among other races.
