Granny with a mission

2012-07-14 00:00

YOU don’t have to wait for the government to do something before you see change. That’s the philosophy of Cwengi Myeni (69), who was announced one of the 15 finalists for 2012 Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award, placing her as one for three in the health caregivers’ category.

Myeni believes that “when you commit yourself you can get far in life”.

She began work as a home-based care nurse at Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust (Hact). As the nursing services manager, Myeni saw potential in her own and surrounding communities. There is a general view that once you reach a certain age there is nothing you can do, but Myeni has successfully challenged this.

With her passion for woman’s empowerment she initiated her Grannie Support Group project in 2006 and the Gogolympics in 2012, aiming at encouraging woman to exercise. She is now internationally known.

“I am what I am from what I have gone through myself,” said Myeni. Being from an underprivileged home herself, Myeni learnt to love and to help from her parents and her community.

Her contribution to developing Hact has turned it into a thriving department that focuses on providing for people with and affected by HIV and Aids in KwaZulu-Natal. It also helps bring the community together.
