Grant Khomo Week: KZN U16 pull off last-minute win against Pumas

2012-07-03 00:00

THE KZN U16 XV got off to a good start in the opening game of the Grant Khomo Week being played in Johannesburg yesterday.

Playing the first game at the University of Johannesburg Stadium, they snuck in winning 22-19 in the last few minutes against the Pumas.

Although the win came at the end of the game and both sides scored three tries, KZN deserved to win as the tries scored by the Pumas came from handling mistakes by the local boys.

The Pumas gained all three their try by capitalising on mistakes made during KZN attacks.

At half time all KZN had to show was a penalty by Morné Joubert (Glenwood) with the Pumas scoring two tries, both intercepts by speedy centre Ian Truter. He ran about 70 metres to score both tries, giving easy conversions and 14 points in the first half.

Early in the second half it was again a dropped ball in a pass that led to the Pumas counter-attacking, and Armand van Wyk scored an unconverted try for the Pumas to lead 19-3.

KZN continued doing well in the scrums and lineouts and in the last 15 minutes of the match they scored three tries, two of which were converted by Joubert.

Fullback Chris Bredell scored the first, followed shortly after by scrumhalf Kwazi Khanyile. With time running out, lock Jordan Martin (Westville) stormed over and with the successful conversion, KZN had taken the lead for the first time. They played the remaining two minutes without further score to win their first game 22-19.

The Academy team, playing in Wellington, were doing reasonably well and were leading 19-15 with about 15 minutes remaining.

The score at halftime was 15-14 to SWD but there was not much to tell between the two teams.

In the last 15 minutes a lack of discipline saw three yellow cards dished out to KZN players and playing at least one man short. They let in three further tries to lose 19-34. Tries were scored by centre Brad Ellse (Westville) and wing Saphiwe Ntombela (George Campbell) with three penalties by Warren Potgieter (Glenwood).

The KZN Country Districts team had a romp scoring seven tries to win 53-10 against the Leopards Country Districts, after leading 20-10 at half time.
