Grants: Hundreds head to centre to re-register

2012-10-04 00:00

PENSIONERS and the disabled queued in large numbers at the Bombay Road Civic Centre yesterday in the mistaken impression that they had to re-register or face losing their grants.

“People have left their pay points in various areas in Pietermaritzburg to come here because they were told that today is registration day, which was not true,” said Zobaphi Shabane, chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in Ward 31. She organised a group of local women to help ensure that elderly and disabled people got priority.

KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for the SA Social Security Agency, Mbizeni Mdlalose, said the centre usually sees 450 to 550 on a pay day, but yesterday more than 1 000 arrived.

Mdlalose said there was a miscommunication that caused some beneficiaries to think they had to re-register yesterday to continue getting paid.

“We would like to appeal to all our beneficiaries not to panic,” he said.
