Great Xperia-nces

2014-03-08 00:00

SONY mobile have become known for producing some of the most durable products on the market. These days it’s hard to find one of the company’s products which is not water- or dustproof, but the party tricks of throwing your smartphone in water or stepping on the screen with high heels are now boring.

With that in mind two of Sony’s latest offerings — the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet — put some deadly internal power behind the tough exterior. Not the most innovative of names, we know … But the Xperia Z2 Tablet is exactly what the name says it is. Stretching the screen of Sony’s flagship smartphone into a package that’s well worth it and is possibly one of the best Android tablets on the market.

The Z2 smartphone saw few upgrades to its look and feel, but still remains a high-end smartphone worthy of praise.

The Xperia Z2 smartphone

Integrated into the device is a 20,7 megapixel camera with Sony’s G Lens technology. As with many smartphones on the market today, the Z2 is able to capture vividly sharp images under the correct lighting and good conditions. But the best part about the Z2 is that it can be used in not only wet weather, but in the pool as well. You couldn’t take the Z2 deep sea diving though as it’s only waterproof under one metre and for 30 minutes, but it is still a nifty feature to have if you’re going out for a day at the beach. The camera also records video and plays back in full high definition at 1080p and is the only smartphone on the market at present that can record video at 4K — four times full high definition to be screened on an Ultra high definition TV.

The Z2 smartphone also comes standard with a few fun camera features slotted into the main camera app. The Timeshift video mode allows the user to shoot 120 frames per second, which makes slow motion playback sharper. A wider range of filters for photos is also available and the Augmented Reality feature is entertaining during a boring day in the office.

The Z2 smartphone also runs the Android operating system off a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2,3 GHz quad-core Krait CPUs, which makes multitasking and running multiple apps smoother. The device also boasts a 19-hour battery life in 3G mode.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet

On getting one’s hands on the Z2 Tablet, a noticeable difference is felt. The Z2 Tablet is one of the slimmest and lightest tablets available, even when compared to other devices such as the Apple iPad Air.

The tablet boasts a 10,1 inch full high-definition Triluminos display with Sony’s unique X-Reality engine which analyses images for optimal colour, sharpness and contrast while reproducing absent pixels.

Other specifications of the tablet mirror those of the Z2 smartphone, including the Snapdragon 801 processor, water- and dust-proof features. Yes, this is a tablet you can finally use in the bath tub, but don’t stay in too long, because after 30 minutes your fingers might be wrinkled, but who knows what might happen to the device!

Digital Noise-Cancelling headset

In addition to the launch of the Z2 Tablet and Z2 smartphone, Sony also introduced a new digital noise-cancelling headset, the secret behind which is a speaker on the outside of the headphone that captures sound to create a negative sound. While most noise- cancelling headphones are chunky pieces of equipment with a built-in component that needs to be powered independently to operate, the Sony headset uses a component built into the smartphone itself to power the headset’s digital noise-cancelling feature. This can easily make one doubt the ability of the headset, but Sony boasts an up to 98% reduction of ambient sound when using the headset.

All new Sony Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablets offer exclusive entertainment with their purchase — with six movies from Sony Pictures including Captain Phillips, through the XperiaM Privilege Application. Both devices also come with the Sony Walkman app for music and the PlayStation app, which can act as a secondary screen for the PS4. Driving games for PS4 will allow the Z2 and Z2 Tablet to be used as a rear-view mirror.

Overall Impression

Sony has released two great new products, with unique selling points; whether the user will be able to make use of all the features of the device is dependent on their entertainment needs. Essentially the Z2 Tablet is an entertainment hub rather than a workstation; however the company does offer an Office Suite package free with the device. The Z2 smartphone may just be a few steps up from its predecessor, the Xperia Z1, but it is still a noteworthy device.
