Great turn-out for racing event

2013-09-16 00:00

SOUPED up vehicles revving their engines, before disappearing amid smoke and the screeching of tyres, had the crowd doing double-takes at the weekend when the Ballito Street Heroes Race participants burnt rubber down the Laguna Seca Precinct Track.

The event began on Saturday morning with cars from different classes — ranging from super cars, Maseratis and Lamborghinis to smaller cars like the VW Golf — all eager to show their mettle.

Ed Hill, one of the organisers for the event, said an event like this is just what the community needed.

“There is a huge enthusiasm for racing in KwaZulu-Natal and no track. A lot of illegal racing happens, so we wanted a legal event with a safe track,” said Hill.

Saturday saw over 2 000 people attending, while close to 3 500 fast car enthusiasts were recorded yesterday.

The four different categories, being super cars, KZN Club, Porsche club cars and experienced drivers, were limited to 30 entries booked to participate on Saturday.

The top 10 times in each class raced in the finals yesterday, the winner receiving a Mandela medallion sponsored by SA Gold Exchange.

Famed MX Motocross rider Brian Capper also showed up for the event.
