Greene blazes amazing 58 at Vic

LOCAL Sunshine Tour rookie Dan Greene is supposed to be enjoying a break from the fairways, but clearly he has too much time on his hands.

The lanky Gowrie Farm pro shook up a local club competition this week as he shot a scarcely believable 58 at Victoria Country Club’s midweek competition.

That, for those still crunching the numbers, is 13-under par on a course that is no pushover at the best of times.

In typical Greene style, he simply brushed it off as an “accident” waiting to happen.

“I have actually been saying that a crazy score like that is just around the corner,” he told the Weekend Witness yesterday.

Greene’s scorecard included an astonishing 11 birdies and he crowned his day with an eagle on the par-five 18th.

The assistant golf professional at Victoria, Ian Geldenhuys, said Greene’s exploit is unprecedented.

“Even though there was placing on the fairways, he must have shot the lights out to get that score around here,” Geldenhuys enthused.

“I am pretty sure it is the unofficial club record, and it goes without saying that his pairing won the day’s competition after a score like that!”

Greene, who has made a blistering start to life in the paid ranks, is currently the leading rookie on the circuit, and he is lining up a strong winter campaign.

“I have been working on a few things, but the one thing that has really helped is going back to my old putter,” he revealed.

Greene’s length off the tee, coupled with his renewed confidence with the flat stick, should make him a formidable foe in the traditionally tough slog through the winter months.

“I don’t plan to rest on my laurels when I get back into the swing of it,” he added.

“I am raring to go.”

If he can keep shooting the odd 58, the rest of the tour will be left in no doubt whatsoever as to what the colour Greene stands for.
