Griquas, Kings hold breath

2013-12-03 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Griquas and the Eastern Province Kings face an anxious wait to see if they will play Currie Cup rugby next year.

The proposal to expand the Currie Cup from six teams to eight next year was not passed during a special general meeting held in Johannesburg back in September.

While the final vote was in favour of the amended structure of the competition, with a 19/10 split, the motion didn’t carry because it required a 75% majority vote.

The Kings and the Griquas would have been added to next year’s competition before the voting process scuppered those plans.

Reports suggested that five small unions — Boland, Border, SWD, Leopards and Falcons —

voted against the proposal to expand the Currie Cup. However, South Africa’s bigger unions organised a re-vote that will take place this Friday. The re-vote could allow Griquas and EP into an eight-team event next year.
