Grisly find: police investigating women’s severed leg on roadside

2011-07-18 00:00

MEMBERS of security company Reaction Unit South Africa, who responded to a report of a human body lying at the side of the R102 freeway between Verulam and Phoenix at the weekend, found it was in fact a human leg.

The leg, severed at the top of the thigh, appeared to be that of a woman wearing a white shoe.

Head of the unit, Prem Balram said the Phoenix operations Centre had received a call from a motorist at about 8 am on Saturday notifying the controller about a “child or person” lying on the grass next to the freeway.

The motorist had said he was unable to get a good view as the scene flashed by too fast.

Reaction officers went to the scene and were surprised to find a human leg lying at the side of the road.

The area was cordoned off and Balram said bystanders reported that an accident had happened in rainy weather in that vicinity the night before.

Blood was also found on the southbound lane of the road.

The leg was handed over to police for removal to the mortuary.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge confirmed the grisly find and said police are still investigating whether the leg was linked to the accident which had occurred in the vicinity.
