Grown-up Peter Pan comes to Kwasuka

2007-01-01 00:00

The play is set in the Point Road flat of a woman who has perfected the art of survival. Then a stranger arrives at her window and tries to persuade her that he is the eternal flying boy of her childhood, raising issues of what is real and what is fiction, fantasy and flawed memory. After all, where are Peter Pan and Wendy now? Did they grow up in the end?

“We discovered we both had a pull to Durban's South Beach area, the council's great embarrassment. It's not a unique situation, but two or three paces will take you from the peppermint palaces into abject poverty and deprivation. There are stories there, and we wanted to hear some of them,” says Mortimer.

Two was performed for the first time at the Musho Festival for New Writing in January and was also on the programme for the Witness Hilton Arts Festival.
