Growth: PMB-based BSI in R70-mln expansion

2008-05-14 00:00

William Battershill, BSI Steel CEO and chairman, turns the soil at the start of construction of a R70 million steel processing and distribution depot in Meyerton, Gauteng. Pietermaritzburg-based JSE AltX-listed BSI Steel owns the 23 hectare site in Meyerton that will boast a 17 000 m2 under-roof facility aimed at consolidating the group’s processing and trading activities servicing Gauteng and over-land African exports. The new facility will include a cut-to-length line, recently ordered from Reef Engineering and a slitting line, which was rebuilt last year. Battershill explained:

‘With efficiencies being of vital importance in this industry, continuing to operate several businesses spread throughout Gauteng was untenable. Consolidation of our business into the new facility will significantly improve our service levels to our customers throughout southern Africa and maximise synergies between the various trading operations.’

The warehouse and office block are expected to be completed by February 2009, commencing with the installation of the slitting line in November this year.
