Gruesome photo causes a Twitter storm

2014-04-10 00:00

A STORM broke out on social media yesterday after the state showed a gruesome picture of the dead Reeva Steenkamp on TV screens in the Pretoria High Court.

The photo shocked Oscar Pistorius, the court gallery and the world.

It appeared on television for mere seconds.

Debate on Twitter was furious.

“What the state did was wrong … If that was my daughter I’d beat that guy up,” tweeted Emil Werner of prosecutor Gerrie Nel’s action.

His sentiments were echoed by many others.

Professor Johannes Froneman, a media lecturer at the North West University, tweeted: “No one said a murder trial like this is sanitised TV for family entertainment”.

Johan Duvenhage said gruesome photos are common in criminal cases. “There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s part of the proceedings”.

Meanwhile, Data Driven Insight (DDI) has found that fewer people who have been following the case are now likely to use the word “guilty” than at the beginning of the trial.

The biggest change came after Pistorius howled on the stand on Tuesday as he described shooting Steenkamp.
