Guard killer (21) jailed for 30 years

2008-07-24 00:00

KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Vuka Tshabala has sentenced the 21-year-old killer of a Dalton security guard to an effective 30 years’ imprisonment.

Judge Tshabalala convicted Velani Ntuli of shooting and killing Sandile Dlamini — a security guard employed by Mtulwa Clinic in Dalton — while attempting to rob him of his firearm on November 13, 2006.

The judge, sitting with assessors, found that although the planned robbery was premeditated, Ntuli did not necessarily intend to murder the victim.

As it turned out he got his “just desserts” and also suffered as a result of Dlamini having fired back at him in self- defence, wounding him in his buttocks.

As a result Ntuli did not succeed in robbing Dlamini of his gun, as he intended.

The judge said it was aggravating that Ntuli lured the security guard to accompany him on a pretext that he was being assaulted by others and needed help.

“As a good Samaritan he [Dlamini] agreed to accompany you for your own safety,” the Judge said.

Judge Tshabalala sentenced Ntuli to 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder, 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances, and to five years’ imprisonment for the unlawful possession of a firearm.

He ordered the sentences on the last two counts to run concurrently.
