Guard shot dead by robbers at mall

A SECURITY guard was shot dead and another seriously wounded during an armed robbery at the eSikhawini Mall, near Richards Bay, on Thursday.

The police said they were investigating a case of armed robbery, murder and attempted murder following an incident that happened around midday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said security guards were delivering cash to one of the banks when they were shot at by the suspects. One security guard died at the scene and the other one was taken to hospital for medical attention.

“The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Naicker. “No arrest has been made at this stage.”

Local councillor Babhekile Mthembu said she would meet with the police to learn more details about the shooting as she was attending a council sitting at the time the incident happened. “From what I have learned a security guard and a member of the community were shot and injured during the attack.”

She said this was the first time an armed robbery had taken place at the mall.

“We’ve had an incident in the past where a store at the mall was held up, but no one was injured, and there was also an ATM bombing some time ago,” she said.

An employee in one of the businesses located at the mall confirmed there was a robbery. Attempts to locate the management of the mall were unsuccessful.
