Guard shot in cash heist

2010-06-08 00:00

A SECURITY guard suffered a serious gunshot wound to the head during a cash-in-transit heist in which over R100 000 was taken in Underberg yesterday morning.

Manqoba Phungula, who works for Berg Protection Services, was taken to Midlands Hospital after he had been shot in the head.

The director of Berg Protection Services, Mark Winterboer, said Phungula had collected money from various businesses and was taking it to be banked. He was shot while the security vehicle was on its way to First National Bank.

“They shot one of our members. They took boxes, which contained over R100 000. They got away with a silver VW, which they dumped in Bulwer before they got into another vehicle,” said Winterboer.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said Phungula was attacked in front of Standard Bank.

“As the man was taking the cash box into the bank, three men approached him and one of them shot the guard once in the head.

“They took the box and his service firearm and got away in a grey [VW] Golf,” said Naicker.

Naicker said police are out in full force to hunt down the suspects. “We are investigating the matter and we have dispatched members of the organised crime unit to handle the matter,” said Naicker.
