THE late Afro-jazz legend, Sipho Gumede, will be remembered in a ceremony at the Siyabonga Siyaphila Jazz Picnic Day, a family jazz affair to be hosted at Inanda Dam on New Year’s Day.

Gumede, who is credited with taking the afro-jazz to new heights, will be honoured by his protégé, Bongani Nkwanyana.

Nkwanyana is regarded as the next best thing after his mentor Gumede, who died in 2004. He has been a permanent feature of Gumede’s band for more than a decade.

Other artists who will be part of the event include Joe Nina, Shabalala Rhythm, Nomahlubi Langa, Adam Glass and DJ Glass. The show will be hosted by Ukhozi FM’s DJs Irvin “DJ Amen” Sihlope and Mandla “Mr Gold” Mdletshe.

Nkwanyana will play his compositions Song for Sipho Gumede, When Days Are Dark Friends Are Few and Mantombi.

The show will run from 7 am till late. Tickets for adults cost R70 at Computicket and R100 at the gateand R20 for children aged between three and 12. For parking, drivers will pay R20 at the gate only.
