Gunshots over breakfast

2014-08-06 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman and her family had a lucky escape when they were confronted by two gun-toting criminals while having breakfast at a family home in Durban.

One robber was later shot dead.

The woman, who is a doctor in the capital, declined to be named for safety reasons.

She said she and her husband were visiting family in Newlands East, Durban, on the weekend when they came under attack.

At 9 am on Sunday the women and her family of five, as well as a baby younger than two months old, were having breakfast in their downstairs dining room when two men barged in with guns.

“The entrance area is upstairs and the dining area is downstairs … The two men carrying guns walked in and we saw them coming down the stairs,” she said.

The woman and her cousin fled from the room in different directions and hid whilst the intruders confronted a male relative.

“They demanded the car keys and that the gate be opened. When they thought that they were not being taken seriously, they fired a shot inside the house.

“The shot ricocheted off the wall and hit the gate motor, causing it to jam.”

She said: “I had called the cops and when I heard the shot, I did not know who had been shot, so I also called the ambulance.”

The gunshot alerted two neighbours, both of whom were armed, and one of whom is a police officer.

They exchanged gunfire with the robbers, hitting one man who died at the scene.

The women said the ordeal lasted about 20 minutes. All her family emerged unharmed.

Colonel Jay Naicker said an inquest was opened into the death of the suspect, and police were also investigating a case of house robbery.
