Gutzeit shows the laaities

2010-12-13 00:00

JADE Gutzeit stormed to enduro cross victory yesterday in the opening event of the FeverX Games, after the Southern Gypsy Queen and Dance opened the historic event with You’re on Fire on Saturday night.

“It’s all systems go,” said event co-ordinator Neil Tapinos yesterday, who seemed in a calm mood considering the scale of the event. “It’s great to see everyone here and the bikes storming through the enduro course after so many months of planning. Tickets are selling well and we are expecting large turnouts at our evening entertainment events this week.”

The Southern Gypsy Queen were so well received by the South Coast that they were asked to perform at a lunch-time matinee while the bikers roared around the enduro cross course yesterday. “It’s great to be in Margate,” said lead singer Gareth Wilson from the stage. “You guys rock!”

The FeverX Enduro Cross organiser Natalie Milton congratulated the Fever paper for its first annual event. “It was well organised and everyone came out to support the enduro cross riders,” she said. “Well done to Greg Orsmond and Neil Tapinos for this incredible event and we hope it goes well for the rest of this week.”

Gutzeit was a deserving victor in the FeverX Enduro Cross event, clearly overpowering his competitors, many of whom see him as a hero. Gutzeit arrived on Saturday for the practice rounds, having flown from the Motorsport South Africa (MSA) awards ceremony at Caesar’s Palace on Friday night, where he was crowned both off-road and enduro champion for 2010 for the seventh time.

“I am so glad I came here,” he said. “It has been an awesome event. Everyone has put in a lot of effort and it has paid off well. For something that was planned after the Roof of Africa and the MSA awards, they got a good turnout.”

Gutzeit, who had to delay joining his family in Mauritius to attend the event, said it was worth his while and he will be joining his family today. “It was great to race with so many of my fellow racers from KZN,” he said. “I always enjoy watching the laaities race ... and it’s good to let them know who’s boss!”

ALL events will take place at the FeverX Headquarters (Margate Sports School) unless otherwise stated.
