Gyrocopter crash kills couple

2008-09-14 00:00

A Gauteng couple burnt to death when their helicopter crashed in the Jagersrust Mountains near Bergville last week.

Willem Jacobus (53) and Susan Le Roux (51) from Pretoria died on Thursday after their gyrocopter crashed and caught fire.

The accident happened at about 2.30 pm. The couple were part of a group of six gyrocopters that were flying from Harrismith to Dragonspeak in Winterton.

It is not clear what caused the accident but SAPS spokeswoman Captain Charmaine Struwig said the area was shrouded in mist when the accident happened.

“Poor weather conditions in the area have been hampering recovery operations. At this stage, it is unknown whether the weather played a role in the crash”, she said last week. Bergville police have launched an inquest into the deaths.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is investigating. SACAA spokeswoman, Phindile Gwewu, said an investigation was under way.
