H1N1: first KZN death recorded

2009-08-17 00:00

LAST week, KwaZulu-Natal recorded its first death from the H1N1 “swine flu” virus.

According to Dr Ayo Olowolagba, head of Infectious Diseases Control for the province, a pregnant 23-year-old first-time mother died at Addington Hospital on Wednesday. She was the fourth known person in the country to die from the virus.

The Sunday Tribune reported that the woman, who came from Adams Mission south of Durban, was seven months’ pregnant. Her name had not been released as her next-of-kin had not yet been traced.

She was admitted to Addington Hospital early last week with a high fever and an acute urinary tract infection. Complications set in rapidly and she and her unborn child died. Authorities took samples and sent them to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), which reported a positive reading for H1N1 after two days.

The last reported number of infections in the province was 132.

As the number of people affected by the virus increases, the The KZN Health Department is reportedly stepping up its “Your health is in your hands” H1N1 awareness campaign. — WR.
