The BS Duncan Memorial Triathlon opened the 2008 triathlon season at Midmar Dam last weekend.

Chris Lionnet ran home to a solid win over the one-kilometre swim, 30-km cycle and 7,5-km run course in a time of 1hour 29,32 seconds. A quality field saw Johnny de Dominicis take second (1h31.05) ahead of Dean Moore (1h32.00).

Gillian Curr led the women’s race from the start to win in a time of 1:41,43 seconds. Alexia Loisou placed second (1h43.05) with Jenny Sutton (1h46.15) third.

Loy de Jager won the 18/19 age group with a time of 1h01:15 for the 750-m swim, 20-km cycle and five-kilometre run. Bryce Mitchell won the 14/15 age-group with Jolene Thompson the first girl home. Jeannie Botha had an overall win in the 10/11 age-group.

Merredew wins Potgieter Trophy

Sean Merredew sprinted to victory at the Potgieter Trophy held on the South Coast over the weekend in a time of two hours six minutes for the 85-km course. In a close battle for second Travys Wilkins just edged out David Leiman. The top three women were Isabel Moolman, Claire Matthews and Marina Smuts.

TRIATHLON

The KZN Triathlon Championships, presented by Tri-X Multisport Club, takes place at Midmar Dam tomorrow morning.

The event kicks off at 7 am with a 1,5-km swim, 40-km cycle and 10-km run for the Elite, U23 and 16 to 19 groups. At 10.30 am the 12 to 15 category will complete a 400-m swim, 10-km cycle and 2,5-km run, followed by the eight to 11 category doing a 200-m swim, five-kilometre cycle and 1,25-km run.

Entry fees will be R80 for 15 years and under, R100 for 16 to 19 years and R140 for 20 years and older. A penalty of R20 will be charged for late entries on race day. •Entries close tomorrow for the Dual Ultra Triathlon, which takes place at Midmar next Sunday, January 27. Participants will be challenged with a fresh two-kilometre swim, an 80-km cycle and a fast 20-km run along Midmar’s shores. With the 2007 pilot Canoe Event receiving encouraging support, 2008 canoe athletes will take on a more taxing paddle of 15 km.

At 6.15 am, the Canoe Triathlon will start, with Swim Tri-Athletes starting at 7 am. Elite athletes and age groupers can anticipate racing for a race purse that amounts to R40 000.

Top athletes — such as the three Storm brothers, Carl, Brad and Anton, and top canoe multi-sport athlete Dan Hugo — have all confirmed their participation. Scotsman Fraser Cartmell, a top International Pro Triathlete, will also be taking part in the race. Canoe champ JP van der Linde is also expected to defend his title. Pre-entries will be accepted up until 11 pm tomorrow. Late entries close on Saturday, January 26.

Maverick Events are hosting the Maverick Cycles KZN Super Classic from Garlic Timbers (Hilton) next Sunday, January 27.
