Half-marathon winner opens 600?m gap to take top spot

2010-03-03 00:00

MASEKU Ntuthual ran away with the Vryheid half-marathon on Saturday, taking an impressive 1hr 11 min 32sec for the tough out-and-back course from Cecil Emmet Park.

Ntuthual had over 600 metres advantage over Mr Price’s Clement Nkosi, who finished in 1 hr 13 min 46 sec.

Local athlete Muzi Magaula was third, just under a kilometre adrift.

It was local unlicensed runners who dominated the ladies’ race. Winnie Mnisi was the best of the field, taking the tape in 1:35:24.

Beatrice Hlope followed in 1:42:10, six minutes ahead of Vicky Viviers of the Richards Bay Club, who filled the final podium position and took the honours in the 40-49 age group.

Only 13 seconds separated the top three in the 10 km, which, despite the tough course, was won by Freedom Khumalo in 32 min, 40 sec.

The Nedbank athlete managed to prise himself 40 metres clear of Empangini’s Nkosinathi Zungu, who finished in 32 min 47 sec, with Zondezi Siesang, also of the Nedbank club, in third, only another six seconds adrift.

Nongoma’s Zinhle Mtshali had no such pressure in the ladies’ 10 km, crossing the line in 40 min 25 sec, fully 500 metres clear of Sindile Ndlovu, with the host club’s Paula Smal third in 48 min 23 sec.

Zimbabwean’s Samuel Pazanga and Professor Mollen dominated Sunday’s Postnet Weekend Witness Maritzburg Marathon.

However, it was third-placed Bongani Msimango of the Boxer club who took the title of KZN Marathon Champion for his 2:30:19 tour around the city.

The ladies’ title was secured by Melanie van Rooyen, who set a new course record of 3:1:32, overtaking Carol Mercer in the final two kilometres.

The full results of the Vryheidrace, including all age group and championship results, will be covered in the Weekend Witness this coming Saturday.
