Hammarsdale: rape accused principal suspended

2012-06-20 00:00

A HAMMARSDALE headmaster who has been at his post for four months while on bail pending an appeal against a rape sentence has been told not to come to back work.

Nhlanhla Victor Mbongwe, who has an 18-year jail sentence hanging over his head for raping one of his pupils, remained in charge of the school after he was found not guilty during an internal provincial Education Department inquiry.

This was apparently due to a lack of evidence.

The department picked up the flaw and this week sent Mbongwe a suspension letter.

“The court supersedes our internal process,” said Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi.

“He must be suspended until the finalisation of his appeal.”

The victim, an orphan, was 14 years old when she was raped in 2009.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority has applied to the Camperdown Magistrates’ Court to have Mbongwe listed on the sexual offenders’ register.

Mbongwe confirmed yesterday that he had been suspended pending his appeal.

“I received the letter last week,” he said.

“I will have to see what will happen as their are some teachers who fabricated lies.”
