Hammarsdale songbird performing at crown gospel music awards in Durban

2011-11-05 00:00

AFRO-POP singer Thembisile Ntaka will be performing at the Crown Gospel Music Awards in Durban tomorrow.

The songbird, who is from Hammarsdale, has recorded two albums and plans to release a gospel album and an afro-soul-jazz compilation in December.

One Night Only Gospel with Thembisile “takes me back to praise and worship basics”, she said, and the jazz album “will show how much I have grown.

“I have learnt a lot about life, being broke as a struggling musician with bills piling up, and I have a story to tell,” she said.

Ntaka has just returned from Holland where she starred in the musical African Mamas, her debut on the stage.

“It was the first time I had done a theatre production and I really learnt a lot. I have always looked up to Mam’ Miriam Makeba as a music icon, but I never really knew her story.”

She said the musical was an opportunity to identify with the legendary South African singer. “I am also a mother and a musician who made it from rags to riches through my love and passion for music,” she said.

Ntaka is plans to establish a foundation in her hometown, and has hopes for a recreation centre for the community.

The Crown Gospel Awards take place at Durban’s International Convention Centre at 4.30 pm. Tickets are available from Computicket at 0861 915 8000.
