Hanged family: autopsy finds no sign of struggle

2011-05-17 00:00

AN autopsy has found that the bodies of the family found hanging outside an apartment in Empangeni on Saturday show no signs of struggle.

Said Richards Bay organised crime unit head Colonel M. Mthembu, “At this stage it looks as if they died by being hanged. We are still waiting on post-mortem blood tests that may reveal new information. We will continue investigating this as a murder case.”

He said poisoning has yet to be ruled out.

The dead are Zandile Zungu (46), her sons Nthokozisi (24) and Zama (19), and a friend or relative, Soneli Mtshali (32). They were found hanging shortly after daybreak by a next-door neighbour who was on his way to work.

A chair was set just to the side of the mother’s body, possibly indicating she hanged herself last.

ANC North Coast regional secretary Thulani Mashaba, who was at the scene shortly after it happened, said he was shocked and saddened.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the Zungu and Mtshali families.” He said the ANC will send a delegation to the affected families and the flats where the hangings happened.

The family have been described as “pleasant”. They ran a catering business on the ground floor adjacent to the apartment block.
