Harburg police station best in PMB cluster

2011-12-14 00:00

THE Harburg police station, which serves a rural area of widely spread homesteads, was named best station in the Pietermaritzburg cluster yesterday, with the best detectives and top crime prevention skills.

Cluster commander Major-General Parbathie Maharaj praised station commander Captain Siphosiphi Luthuli for his discipline and leadership by example.

“We only have a handful of [police] members, but we’re fortunate that co-operation and togetherness is there and the community trusts us,” said Luthuli, whose area has 26 000 residents.

“We mostly deal with housebreakings, serious assaults and now and again we have murders,” he told The Witness.

Luthuli is not fazed by the challenges of the job.

“This job is not about money. At the end of the day someone has to protect the community and I get happy that I do my share.

“I always tell members the community is your boss. When you give 100% the community trusts you,” he added.

Maharaj said her cluster had adopted a “no-nonsense” approach to fighting crime.

“We’re committed to prevent and deter crime with no fear or favour, without corruption. When duty calls we respond,” she said.

The second best station is Prestbury, whose detectives also placed second.

In third place is Bishopstowe, which came second for crime prevention.

Dalton was first for crime prevention and third for detection.
