Hat-trick for Bergstrom

2012-05-05 00:00

THE new crown prince of South African cycling, Nolan Hoffman, successfully defended his title in the 106 km Tour Durban against the nuggety BMC team riders, before heading for Pietermaritzburg to continue his giant-killing spree at the national track champs last weekend.

Hoffman’s win is his second back-to-back title in the race and his team’s third following Dean Edwards’s win in 2010, making them the first team to win a hat trick in this famous race.

Hoffman also outshone his rivals at the SA National track and Para Cycling Championships at Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, last weekend where he and Maroesjka Matthee completely obliterated their elite men’s and elite women’s fields over the five-day cycling showcase.

HATHERLY CLAIMS ALL AFRICA MTB CHALLENGE ENDURO

HILLCREST High School pupil Alan Hatherly (BMC-SA) took the overall honours in the CSA KZN All Africa MTB Challenge Enduro at Cascades MTB Park last weekend after stringing two solid runs together. Fellow junior rider Tiaan Odendaal (Turner Loaded SA) posted the quickest time on the first run. Hatherly and Hilton Frost (Marshalls World of Sport), a marathon and cross-country expert, pushed hard to reel in the initial pace-setter, but a twisted chain early on in his second run saw Odendaal’s hopes dashed and Hatherly claiming the win.

Former multiple women’s cross-country champion Allegra Wykerd gave it her all in the women’s section, but her best effort just wasn’t enough to edge ahead of Natalie Bergstrom, who continued her good run in the recently introduced format to take the women’s title. Tamryn Taylor claimed third place.

EXPERIMENTAL MTB

WEEKEND A SUCCESS

CARL Calverley (Wsquared/Subaru) showed just what he is capable of on the day when he blitzed the rest of the CSA KZN All Africa MTB Challenge 45km Classic field to claim a comfortable victory and close off what has been an intriguing two days of experimental mountain biking events at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg. Having sat comfortably in fourth place during the first of the three 15 km laps, Calverley patiently bided his time and trusted his instincts as he settled into a rhythm a little way off the frenetic pace set by early leaders Alan Hatherly (BMC-SA) and Kyle Dorkin (Ellsworth SA). Having claimed victory in the exciting new Enduro race the day before, Hatherly soon tired and dropped off the pace, leaving Calverley and Dorkin to battle it out for the overall honours.

Natalie Bergstorm deservedly claimed her hat-trick of victories at this weekend’s event, having successfully battled it out in the gravity Enduro cross-country eliminator and the 45 km Classic to beat the small yet respectable women’s field in all three events. Bergstrom claimed victory ahead of young talent Ashley Parker-Moffatt (BMC-SA) and Savannah Schuit.

In the 30 km event Gareth Cook powered his way to a sizeable victory ahead of father and son Cian and Kevin Leveridge. Sean van der Merwe won the 15km race.

• Vulintaba Country Estate, just outside Newcastle, launched the Vulintaba Experience — two days of trail running, walking and mountain biking. Participants were treated to over 30 km of superb trails, expertly designed by Jan Abbott of Clearwater Trails.

A beautiful day greeted competitors from Ladysmith and Dundee to enjoy the mountain bike classic and six kilometre run/walk last Sunday morning. Team Jeep athletes dominated the top placings in the 40 km Classic, while Travis Walker won the sprint finish from team-mate Patrick Belton, with Andrew Birkett claiming third. Angela Egeland bagged her second victory for the weekend in the women’s race with Rebecca van der Linde second and Chantal Carter third.
