Hayfields: Woman wakes up to see upside down bakkie

2012-12-03 00:00

A MAN escaped unhurt after flipping his bakkie and going through the fence of a home in Hesketh Drive, Hayfields, on Saturday morning.

Damage estimated at R30 000 was caused to the home of Neesha Sarupen (46), and the bakkie was extensively damaged.

Sarupen described awakening at 4 am to find a bakkie upside down on her lawn. “I heard it happen,” she said. “I woke up and looked at my camera surveillance screen and saw the bakkie upside down in my yard. I was in shock.”

Shortly after, the street became a hive of activity as neighbours came out to see what had happened.

Sarupen said the 29-year-old bakkie driver wasn’t hurt in the accident, but was taken to hospital for a check-up. “If it wasn’t for the trees, he would have landed in my house.”

As the incident has left a gaping hole in her fence, a security guard was hired to stand watch.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the incident was reported to officers. However, no case was opened as the driver suffered only “slight injuries”.

Numerous attempts to get hold of the man, who lives in Pinetown, were unsuccessful.
