Head-on Taxi collision leaves driver dead

2008-10-30 00:00

A taxi driver was killed and 13 passengers seriously injured in a head-on collision in Copesville yesterday evening.

The accident, at the corner of Amethyst Road and Copesville Drive at about 5 pm, involved two taxis — a Kia and a Toyota Quantum.

Msunduzi Municipality firefighters used the jaws of life to free two front seat passengers in the Kia and their driver, who died while still trapped.

All the injured people were taken to Northdale Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the Kia was turning into Amethyst Road when a speeding Toyota Quantum collided against its front passenger door, and shattered the whole front.

Police who attended the accident said they counted 13 seriously injured commuters.

The Witness learnt that the Kia had 18 commuters, who were mostly coming from work in the city, while the Quantum was rushing to the city with five passengers.

Mark Naidoo said he was driving up Amethyst Road to join Copesville Drive when the two taxis collided.

“I noticed the Quantum speeding down Copesville Drive as the Kia was turning to Amethyst Road.

Suddenly I heard the big bang. I panicked and quickly reversed my car,” Naidoo said.

Henry Lakhraj, whose lives on the corner where the accident happened, has witnessed more than five minibus taxi accidents there since he moved in 18 years ago.

“I’m afraid next time these taxis are going to drive into my house and kill my family,” said Lakhraj.
