Headliner upset: Local poet’s performance cut short after venue double—booked

2009-04-19 00:00

Poet and clothing designer Ntsiki Mazwai’s performance was cut down to a mere seven minutes because of a double-booking of the venue on Saturday.

The Fusion of Elements Session, which took place at the Winston Churchill Theatre, was supposed be a four-hour long showcase of local poetry and hip-hop talent with the 29-year-old as the headliner.

However, due to double-booking, the event had to be cut by an hour, leaving Mazwai with very little time to perform her piece.

“I was supposed to perform for 30 to 45 minutes and I only manage to perform for about seven,” said Mazwai.

She added it was sad the show had to be cut because the crowd was so welcoming. “They were a listening crowd. They interacted and that’s good for an artist.”

Stage manager for the event Lungelo Sithole said both the organisers of Fusion of Elements and of the other show said they had booked the venue weeks before the event.

An employee at the theatre said double-bookings are nothing new to the theatre. “They do it all the time,” he said.

Attempts to contact the theatre’s bookings office were unsuccessful.

Despite being cut short, patrons at the event still enjoyed the show. “It was tight. It was really off the hook,” said one of the audience members as she left the venue.
