Health: 1?926 nurses to graduate in KZN

2010-09-07 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Health Department will see 1 926 nurses graduate from nursing colleges around the province on September 9, 10 and 23.

Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said nursing personnel shortages have set back healthcare delivery across the globe.

He said in many instances the shortage stems from a decline in the number of people entering the nursing profession.

Dhlomo said failure to have adequate nursing personnel leads to patients suffering “avoidable adverse outcomes”.

He said government also incurs higher costs of care than necessary.

According to the District Health Barometer of 2009, in 2008/09 the average nurse clinical workload in South Africa was 23 patients per nurse per day.

“There’s a trend which suggests that in poorer areas fewer patients are seen by a nurse per day or, conversely, that nurses are seeing greater numbers of patients in the “wealthy” areas of the country.

He said nursing shortage is a reflection of changes in population demographics, disease profiles and work attitudes.
