Health: All money was used

2010-05-06 00:00

THE KZN Health Department has denied that it is underspending on its hospital revitalisation programme.

This comes after the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) raised the issue for discussion in the national Parliament on Tuesday.

IFP finance spokesperson in the provincial legislature Roman Liptak had said that about R225 million had not been spent by the department on its programme.

He also alleged that underspending by the department had led to a loss of R86 million in comprehensive HIV and Aids grants.

Department spokesperson Chris Maxon denied that money was underspent on HIV and Aids.

He added that the issue of the revitalisation programme is a process. “We must understand that dealing with infrastructure involves issues of planning and environmental assessment processes that might take more than a financial year.

“There are projects that are underway and some have been completed. Whatever amount was left, the treasury said will be rolled over,” said Maxon.

He said all HIV and Aids funds were utilised.

“It is lies that the money was not used. HIV and Aids are the priority in this province so all the allocated funds were used,” he said.
