Health: Private doctors to help out

2010-08-05 00:00

PRIVATE sector doctors in KwaZulu-Natal have vowed to work with public sector doctors to bring health services to more people.

Head of private hospital group Netcare Limited, Dr Richard Friedland, spoke at the annual general meeting of the provincial Specialists Network, a group of public and private medical specialists, at Durban’s Hilton Hotel on Monday evening.

“The government is responsible for providing health care to 84% of the total population ... [we] need to look closely at the government proposed National Health Insurance as it might bring relief to those below poverty line,” said Friedland.

He said a team of general practitioners and nurses from the private sector were sent for training on the use of the Tara Klamp to assist in circumcising men to reduce HIV infections.

Health MEC Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo was one of the guest speakers. MEC Dhlomo admitted that the public health care services are facing serious challenges. “All the bad outcomes are in this province.”

He announced that through funding from U.S.-based Atlantic Philanthropy, his department will employ midwives to mentor others in various districts in the management of first and third stages of labour to reduce the number of women dying of pregnancy-related complications.
