Heavily pregnant woman in crash

2013-06-07 00:00

A HEAVILY pregnant woman who was on her way to hospital apparently to give birth, was rushed to hospital after the taxi she was travelling in collided with a car in Sydney Road in Durban, yesterday morning.

The victim, Joyce Bhengu, was nine months pregnant, according to ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

“The patient sustained neck and back injuries. Our main concern was her safety and of course the safety of her unborn child. We immediately rushed her to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Memorial Hospital for further medical care. We were informed she was on her way to hospital and was expected to give birth today,” said Banks.

Conflicting reports put the number of the injured between 14 and 17 people. The accident occurred near the King Edward Hospital before 8 am. They were all treated for neck and back injuries and minor cuts and abrasions before being transported to various hospitals.

The Witness learnt Bhengu was still in the labour ward at the hospital yesterday evening. Hospital medical manager Sifiso Mtshali said Bhengu had not delivered the child, nor had she gone into labour.

“The mother is fine. She has a bruise on her left arm. The baby is also fine. He/she is not hurt,” said Mtshali.

He said he could not reveal any personal details of the patient in line with the hospital’s confidentiality policy.

ER24 reported another collision involving two taxis at the intersection of Acorn and Old Richmond roads in Mariannhill injuring 30 people, mainly school children aged between four and six years old. All patients sustained minor injuries such as cuts and abrasions and were later transferred to nearby hospitals.

It was reported one taxi was lying on its side while a second was found down an embankment near the accident scene.
