Heavy goods truck ploughs into delivery cyclist

2009-12-09 00:00

A CYCLIST is in a critical but stable condition in the Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban after he was struck by a heavy goods truck in the intersection of Mitchell and Daly Roads, Greyville, yesterdaty afternoon.

It is thought that the cyclist had entered Mitchell Road and the driver of the truck was unable to avoid him. The truck ploughed into the cyclist and came to rest on the grassy centre median.

The injured man lay pinned on top of the mangled remains of his bicycle, unable to move as the truck’s chassis pressed on his badly fractured legs.

Members of Netcare911’s Specialised Rescue Unit worked in close cooperation with officers of the police search-and-rescue unit and eThekwini firefighters, and used the jaws of life to cut the crushed bicycle into pieces in order to extricate the injured man.
