Hectic July for riders

2008-07-03 00:00

Kerry Harrison held a well-organised training show last Sunday just outside Howick. There were excellent entries and the courses were well designed and built by Gus Oberholster.

The Welcome Stakes was won by Jess Lee riding July Fever, the Gambler Stakes victor was Kirsten Mayne riding Sir William, the Accumulator was won by Katina Saville riding Greek Beau and the Harrison’s Championship was won by Caryn Liversage on The Irishman.

• July is a hectic month for pony riders. The inter-regional pony club show started at the Royal Showgrounds yesterday and continues until Sunday. This year there are nine invitational riders from the Iveagh Pony Club in Ireland. These riders, ranging from 12 to 17 years of age, are competing in all the disciplines on borrowed horses and ponies.

The South African Pony Rider Championships starts at the Durban Shongweni Club tomorrow and continues until July 11.

Next Wednesday, the annual pony show takes place at the Royal Showgrounds and continues until next Saturday.

• The KwaZulu-Natal pony riders who will be representing KZN at the South African championships have been announced. It is interesting that two-thirds of the team’s riders are based in the KZN midlands. The championships offer all riders the chance to compete against the country’s best.

Junior and adult show-jumpers are being catered for with a Shortlands showjumping show from today until Sunday. Phone Shaun Oliff at 082 452 4432.

C & S shows are holding a showjumping show at the Cyril Geoghan Stadium in Durban on July 12 and July 13. Phone Sue Pieters at 031 783 4619.

On July 26 and July 27, the Western Reining Championships will take place at Ashburton. Before these prestigious championships, there will be a 10-day show clinic presented by German international rider and instructor Heiko Keuchal. Phone Jill at 082 574 7987 or Ali at 082 823 5404.
