Helberg: ‘I had sex with Jalien’s mother’

2012-05-18 00:00

RUGBY player Deon Helberg and Manda Reyneke did in fact have a sexual relationship. And yes, a “part” of him did enjoy it.

Helberg (22) revealed this on the Australian television programme 60 Minutes.

The interview, titled Mother Daughter Boyfriend Love Triangle, was broadcast earlier this month and landed on YouTube shortly afterwards.

It was the first time since the bombshell was dropped about the love triangle in November 2010 that the former Blue Bulls player acknowledged having had sex with both his model girlfriend, Jalien Reyneke, and her mother, Manda.

Even as late as December 2011, in an interview with a South African magazine, he and his family denied that there had been any relationship between him and Manda.

At the end of last year the mother pleaded guilty to a charge of provoking or instigating two men to assault Helberg with the intent of seriously injuring him.

The court heard that Helberg and Jalien started dating in 2007 while they were at high school. She was 16 and he was 17.

Helberg, a hostel resident, later moved in with the Reynekes.

Manda said during the court case that she had a sexual relationship with Helberg. After the relationship ended he carried on with his life while she lost her husband, her daughter and her house.

The 60 Minutes interview confirmed that the mother and Helberg had a 22-month relationship. It ended when Jalien discovered letters between the two of them.

According to the video, Manda and Helberg had sex for the first time only four days after starting a flirtation by SMS.

“The sex was by mutual consent. It was romantic. I have no bad memories of that evening,” Manda said in the interview.

Helberg protested that he remained in the relationship only because Manda threatened to tell everyone if he withdrew.

“[After the first time] I just said ‘I really feel bad and I don’t want to do it any more’” was Helberg’s response.

Manda replied, “Deon was never raped. Deon came to me willingly. I might have been his meal ticket, but I wasn’t his prison.”

Interviewer Tara Brown then said to Helberg, “It takes two to tango” and asked whether a part of him did, in fact, enjoy it. To which Helberg replied, “Obviously … obviously, ja’.”
