Help to fulfil Courtney’s dream to have two hands

2008-11-25 00:00

Growing up, Courtney Harvey’s dream was to have two hands like everybody else. Today, that dream costs R350 000 to make a reality.

The community of Mooi River is helping to raise R100 000 towards the Courtney Harvey Fund for a new, high-tech prosthetic arm for her.

Harvey (19) was born without her right forearm and throughout her childhood, had to endure stares and remarks from other children.

But since she could not have a prosthesis while still growing up, she soon learnt to develop a thick skin and a strong character that helped her do everything able-bodied people can do.

She has a driver’s licence, she plays the piano and was actively involved in sports while at school.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, her sister Casey, who is the secretary of the fund, said the fund was launched by the family and community members after Harvey was approached by a big company in South Africa that offered to finance the new bionic arm, known as the i-Limb.

The company later withdrew their offer.

“She was very upset because they basically got her hopes up and then dropped her. It is something she has always wanted. Her goal in life was to have two arms, something many of us take for granted.

“She has never treated it as a burden, but as she grows older it is getting more painful for her. When she types or drives, she has to lean on one side and it is creating back problems for her,” said her sister.

“Nothing would make me happier than to see Courtney get her dream.”

She said it will cost about R295 000 for the bionic arm and the balance will go towards fitting, servicing and skin replacement costs.

The next fundraising campaign planned by the committee will be a Valentine’s Ball scheduled for next year. It is expected to be their biggest project to date.

Casey said there is already a Courtney Harvey Facebook group with 600 members.

“The committee has been able to organise a number of exciting fundraisers, but all donations, sponsorships or contributions would be greatly appreciated,” she added.

Direct deposits can be made to The Courtney Harvey Fund, FNB; Mooi River (22-05-25); account number 74197230359.
