Hermannsburg: Love of numbers earns Maths boffin 99%

2009-12-31 00:00

RALF Kufel, Hermannsburg’s top pupil, says his love of numbers earned him 99% for mathematics in the Independent Board Examinations.

Ralf, who was dux and head boy of Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, scored seven A’s and a spot in the top one percent of the IEB’s mathematics candidates.

The softly-spoken teenager told The Witness that he is still in shock about his excellent results: he expected only three A symbols.

Ralf, of New Germany, achieved distinctions in English, Afrikaans, German, core maths, life orientation, science and accounting.

“It all seems a bit surreal. It’s still sinking in. I wasn’t expecting so many distinctions, but I think its great,” he said.

He said his 99% for mathematics was not a shock as he has always liked numbers and solving mathematical problems.

“I really enjoy maths. It comes naturally to me. It would have been great to get 100%. I’m still happy with my marks.”

Ralf said he had a great matric year and is looking forward to the New Year. He participated in running and made the school’s hockey team.

“School was great. Sometimes I felt that it would never end, but I made the best of it. We had lots of fun too,” he said.

To help him relax, Ralf likes to play computer games, chess and reads extensively. He also enjoyed jogging when he became stressed with the exams.

Ralf has been accepted to read for a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Pretoria next year.

“Engineering interests me because … everything has to be logical and I enjoy that.”
