MOUNTAIN BIKING

KZN-MTB will host the KZN MTB Endurance Team Relay (a fun Cross Country event) tomorrow morning at Cascades.

The event will take place on a course of about five kilometres in length ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty to make it an event for the whole family. Its also a great way to get into the swing of Cross Country before the season starts, without the pressure that goes with racing. Teams of two or three will have a time limit to complete as many laps as possible. For U14 and younger this will be four hours and for Juniors and above, eight hours.

This will be easy to do as riders will do a lap and then rest for one or two laps, depending on how many in the team.

There will be multiple detours, shorts cuts, road blocks and pit stops along the route, these features being “engineered” to help level the playing field between the racing snakes and the fun riders. Participants are encouraged to improve their general knowledge and bring a sense of humour on “race day”. The emphasis is on a fun day outdoors, riding with friends and family.

Funds raised at this event will go towards maintaining the Cascades Trails in 2012. For more info please contact Nick on 082 776 1101. Entries will be taken on the day.

The first MTB classic of the season is the Subaru MTB Classic on January 29, from Cedara College in Hilton. Entries on www.roag.co.za.

Organisers of the nine-day Old Mutual joBerg2c today announced a six-day derivative for mountain bikers who find South Africa’s longest paired mountain bike race a bridge too far.

The new Old Mutual Berg2c starts on April 30, four days into the main event, and picks up the existing route from Sterkfontein Dam in the eastern Free State to Scottburgh.

It covers 577 kilometres of some of the country’s most pristine mountain biking territory at a moderate elevation of 10,119 metres.

Organiser Craig Wapnick said there had been a strong demand for an event of this length, as it was more challenging than the average three-day race, but more accessible than the full Old Mutual joBerg2c.

He advised those that were intent on racing competitively to rather enter the main event as the six-day version would be more of a full-service ride than a race.

Wapnick said entries were available for two-person teams, but a limited number of solo entries would also be accepted.
