High alert after ANC murders

2014-11-10 00:00

SECURITY forces have been beefed up and placed on high alert at KwaMashu hostel, north of Durban, following the murder of four ANC members at the hostel on Friday evening.

In a statement released yesterday by Willies Mchunu, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, a high-powered delegation, including KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni and eThekwini Metro Mayor James Nxumalo visited the scene on Saturday.

Following an intensive interaction with the local leadership, police management and the relatives of the murdered people, Mchunu announced that he was in touch with the Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, for the additional deployment of security forces at the troubled hostel.

Already a high level crack team of detectives has been assembled to probe the attack.

“The community themselves must rise up and participate in the fight against crime, because they know who the criminals are. But in many instances they are scared to even talk about these criminals. If you cannot talk to the police, come to the MEC; come to the department and report the crime,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
