High school murder : Workers saved pupil’s life

2008-08-19 00:00

Krugersdorp — A second pupil would have died in Monday’s samurai sword attack if two school employees had not leapt in front of him.

Stephan Bouwer (18) told yesterday how Joseph Kodisang (26) and Sam Namamela (43) leapt in front of him when Morné Harmse attacked him at the Nic Diederichs Technical High School.

Bouwer said he saw the masked attacker as he walked up the steps to the hall, and was turning to flee when he heard screams.

The next moment he felt the flat of the sword blade strike him against the leg.

“Why are you hitting me?” Stephan asked the laughing attacker.

Then the blade hit him on the side of the head.

“I held my head and could feel myself bleed. I knew I had to get away … my scalp was hanging and I could feel a bone deep in my skull,” he said.

The attacker taunted Bouwer and moved in to strike again, but the two workers jumped in front of Bouwer. Kodisang received a blow to the cheek.

“I can’t believe it was him,” Bouwer said of his attacker.

“He was always so diligent, never smoked or misbehaved at school.”
