Hijack: driver fooled by ‘needy’ man

2009-02-19 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg good Samaritan was hijacked by a man lying on the side of the road pretending to be in need of help on Wednesday night.

Collin Mnkathi (34) was driving his VW Jetta along Newport Road when he saw the man lying on the side of the road.

According to police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram, Mnkathi stopped his car to offer help. “He left his car engine running and climbed out to see if the person was alright. When he approached the man, another man came from behind, and held him at gunpoint.”

Budhram said the man on the ground stood up and grabbed Mnkathi around the neck, throttling him. “They tied him with a rope and drove away in his vehicle.”

He said the car was later found abandoned in Edendale Road.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Arief Loggenburg of the Plessislaer Detective Service has appealed to anyone with information regarding the incident to contact him at 033 398 9703 or on his cell at 072 512 4928.

Any person wishing to supply information, but wanting to remain anonymous, can contact Crime Stop on the toll-free number 08600 10111.
