Hijacker poses as a car buyer

2013-06-26 00:00

A MAN posing as a prospective car buyer hijacked a car salesman from Howick, leaving him stranded at the side of the road, and made off with a double-cab bakkie.

Howick police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said the suspect pretended to be interested in buying the white Toyota Hilux double cab and was offered a test drive.

It is alleged that the vehicle, registration number NR 17523, with no canopy, was stolen at about 5.10pm on Monday.

The suspect came to the car dealership in Howick main road and was allowed to take a test drive. Near Tweedie off-ramp it is alleged that the suspect pushed the salesman out of the vehicle and drove off heading to Mooi River. The salesman was not harmed during this incident,ï¾” said Moodley.

Moodley added that they are investigating a case of motor vehicle theft.

The Witness was unable to get details on how the incident happened. The salesman, Jacques van Dalen, said he was warned by the company not to comment on the matter as it was in the hands of the police.

He said the dealer principal Theo von Mollendorff was the right person to talk to.

'I don't want to break company principles," said Van Dalen.

When contacted by The Witness for more details on the incident, Von Mollendorff said they were in no position to reveal any information. He said they were thankful and grateful that Van Dalen was not hurt and he was safe.

He also said that the car was found in Pretoria and a man was arrested.

Moodley confirmed that the tracking unit traced the car in Pretoria and a man was arrested.
