Hijackers caught while filling tank

2011-08-16 00:00

SCOTTBURGH police recovered a hijacked vehicle and arrested the surprised occupants at a fuel station early on Saturday morning.

Police noticed a silver Honda Ballade fuelling up at Park Rynie Motors and called for a routine check on the vehicle.

It turned out that the vehicle had been hijacked at Folweni near Amanzimtoti on July 9.

The crime prevention unit responded and intercepted the driver as he was about to drive off in the stolen vehicle. After searching the vehicle police found implements that are allegedly used to break into cars and force vehicle ignition switches.

Police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum said the occupants were arrested and detained at the police cells in Scottburgh until they were transferred to Folweni police station the following day.

“The four males and a female were placed under arrest. They face charges of being in possession of car-breaking implements and hijacking.”

Vehicles thefts are sporadic in the Scottburgh patrol area and according to Pandarum the stop-and- search strategy appears to be the most effective means of deterring these criminals. — WR.
